There are few race backdrops quite like Sakhir. The Bahrain International Circuit sits among the sand dunes, cutting through the desert surroundings before transforming once the sun sets. Under the floodlights, the engines roar with the desert night sky overhead. Though it’s a striking way to watch the opening round of the season, Bahrain’s place in F1® extends beyond just the visuals.
The Bahrain International Circuit was built for serious F1® racing
Building a top-notch motorsport circuit in the middle of the desert certainly isn’t an easy feat, but the Bahrain International Circuit turned that ambition into a fully fledged racing venue. The circuit was designed by German engineer Hermann Tilke, built to the standards you’d expect from a Formula 1® track, with the Sakhir desert landscape forming a major part of the circuit’s identity. Then there’s the night race factor. Once the sun goes down, the floodlights flicker on and Sakhir looks completely different, with teams tearing up the track against a dark desert backdrop.
Bahrain International Circuit was also the first track in the Middle East to host a race of the FIA Formula One World Championship™ in 2004, securing its place in modern F1® history. The circuit also has a long connection with F1® testing, having hosted pre-season testing every year since 2021. Its consistent desert conditions make it the place where teams get their first real read on their new cars. This means when the lights go out in Sakhir, the season truly begins.
